Castle Terminology: The Hall

The hall was principal living quarters of a medieval castle or house. The Great Tower at Chepstow Castle (below 1 & 2) is a fine example of an early medieval hall, and is in fact the oldest such stone structure in Wales. The interior hall at Caerphilly (3) displays the arms of the de Clare family.
