Question #6

"There is evidence of pre-historic and Roman occupation at my site, and Welsh legend also associates me with King Arthur himself! My owners have included Welsh princes and English kings. I suffered greatly during the Glyndwr revolt and during the Wars of the Roses. Be sure to bring a torch (flashlight) with you when you come to visit. What castle am I and can you explain my clues?"
Yes, the correct answer is CARREG CENNEN CASTLE!
The site of Carreg Cennen contains evidence of both pre-historic and Roman occupation, not surprising considering that the castle's spectacular siting is well suited for commanding the surrounding countryside. Certain Welsh legend also associates Carreg Cennen with King Arthur.
Although originally built and controlled by the native princes of Wales, including the Lord Rhys, Carreg Cennen was ultimately rebuilt as an impressive Norman masonry castle - the ruins that one sees today. The castle suffered considerable damage during the Glyndwr revolt and was never repaired. One of Carreg Cennen's most interesting features is a cave running beneath the castle, and you'll need a flashlight (torch) in order to follow the passage to its conclusion. Perhaps more memorable is the fact that one side of the castle sits atop a 300-ft sheer cliff!
It's no wonder that many list this gem as their favorite Welsh castle. A friendly visitor center that is part of a working farm, a brisk hike to reach the castle, spectacular siting with commanding and unforgettable views of the surrounding countryside, all conspire to make a trip to Carreg Cennen a most memorable Welsh castle experience!
