Contributing editor to the Castles of Wales Web Site

Irma Hale is an avid photographer and a frequent visitor to Wales. She has contributed many fine photographs to the Castles of Wales web site, including photos for some of the lesser-known Welsh castles, as well as a series of photographs for the whimsical gargoyles found at Raglan Castle.

Irma became interested in Welsh castles and the history of Wales while researching her family's Welsh heritage and their links to Raglan and several other Welsh castles. Irma was born into an artistic family. Her father is a prominent West Palm Beach sculptor, and her mother is the artistic director of Ballet Florida, Palm Beach County’s premiere dance company. As a young girl she studied several artistic disciplines including painting and ballet as well as music, and spent 12 years studying concert piano.

After a period spent performing as a showgirl and aerialist with the Ringling Bros. & Barnum & Bailey Circus, she decided to begin training in the skills necessary to present works on stage. Concentrating primarily on lighting and lighting design, Irma worked on Broadway as well as with the New York City Ballet, and the New York City Opera. Returning to Florida in 1986, she worked with Ballet Florida and the Palm Beach Opera until the opening of the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, where she was employed as the center's Master Electrician and resident Lighting Designer.

Irma began studying photography in 1990 and has done extensive photography in Wales, New Zealand, and Australia. Her most recent photographic project was in Antarctica working as science support for the United States Antarctic Program. She worked there for four months during the Austral summer of 1999-2000, and six months during the Austral spring and summer of 2000-2001. Irma’s experiences on the frozen continent can be found at http://www.irmahale.com. We are pleased to be featuring some of Irma's Welsh castle photographs here at the Castles of Wales web site, and look forward to her continued contributions!
